How to Build a Dog Whelping Box

Plan to build a dog whelping box out of wood yourself

Dog whelping box plan that measures 35½" x 42".
Print the design plans below for building a whelping box. Build the whelping box out of wood. Plan to make it well in advance so the stain sealer dries thoroughly.
This dog litter box will accomodate a 70# doberman or other large canine breed and a large litter of puppies.

  • (1) 4' x 8' x ¾" sheet of plywood
  • (1) 4' x 4' x ¾" sheet of plywood
  • (1) 2" x 4" x 8'
  • (2) 2" x 3" x 8'
  • (1) 30" piano hinge
  • (2) hasps (see photo)
  • (2) quarts stain
  • (2) quarts waterproof wood sealant
  • (1) gallon paint thinner
  • (2) throw-away brushes
  • (50) 2" sheetrock screws to assemble sides, floor, bumper rail
  • (20) 3" sheetrock screws to assemble bumper rail, just in case
  • (2) snap clips to secure the hasps

    Building Materials List

    If you plan on building this wood puppy whelping box using the design plans, you will also need a circular saw or chop saw, drill, tape measure, carpenter's pencil and a speed-square.
    If you are not familiar with how to operate these tools in order to build this whelping box safely, then please do not plan to make this homemade box. They are available to buy wholesale online.
